Shockwave Therapy (StemWave)

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) delivers pulses of acoustic (sound-wave) energy through the skin to a targeted area. We offer it using the StemWave® system as a noninvasive option — no needles, incisions, or medications.

Self-pay treatment. StemWave therapy is offered on a fee-for-service basis and is not billed to insurance. $125 per session. Discounts are available for bundled session packages; call (318) 855-3291 for details.

What is StemWave?

StemWave is a focused acoustic wave device. A handheld applicator is placed on the skin over the treatment area, and it delivers short pulses of mechanical energy into the tissue. In the United States, the StemWave device is registered with the FDA as a Class I device intended for the temporary relief of minor muscle aches and pains and a temporary increase in local blood circulation. It is not FDA-approved or cleared to treat specific diseases.

How shockwave therapy is used

Shockwave therapy in general has been studied for a number of musculoskeletal and tendon problems, such as plantar heel pain and some tendon conditions. The research is still evolving, results vary from person to person, and most studies have used other shockwave devices. We will talk with you honestly about whether it is reasonable to try for your situation and how it might fit alongside exercise, physical therapy, or other treatments.

What to expect

  • Treatments are done in the office and typically take only a few minutes per area. A gel is applied to the skin first.
  • You may feel tapping or pulsing; let the provider know if it is uncomfortable so the settings can be adjusted.
  • Most people return to normal activities right away.
  • The number of sessions varies. Your provider will suggest a plan and reassess how you are responding along the way.

Who should not have it

Shockwave therapy may not be appropriate if you are pregnant, have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners, have an active infection or a tumor in the treatment area, or have certain implanted devices near the area. Tell us about your health history and medications before treatment.

Possible side effects

Temporary redness, soreness, tingling, swelling, or bruising in the treated area can occur. Contact our office if symptoms are severe or do not settle.

Exercises you can do at home

Staying active is an important part of most pain treatment plans. See our shoulder exercises and knee exercises for gentle stretches and strengthening options in lying, seated, and standing positions. Please ask your provider before starting, especially after a procedure.

This page is for general education and is not a substitute for an evaluation by a medical professional. Results vary, and no treatment works for everyone. Your provider will discuss whether this option is appropriate for you, along with its benefits, risks, and alternatives. Insurance coverage varies by plan — please call to verify.
